Know your location - what3words

Unfortunately, in rural areas like ours postcodes and addresses don't always work well when people need to find you.

What3words is a clever system of location finding.

Instead of complex grid or lat/long coordinates it creates a three word code or sequence that is unique to an area just three metres square. The three words are random, unique and never change, and are much more memorable than other methods.

This is an example sequence: whistle.button.horse

Emergency services, delivery companies and others use the system. As it is much more accurate than postcodes it is a big help in rural areas like ours.

Your home will have more than one three word code but is best to take a reading at your front door.

Once you have your own unique code, keep a record of it and keep it near your phone should you need to use it.

Finding your code

There are three ways to get your code:

1. Be lazy - ask a friend or relative who uses the system to generate your code for you.

2. Go online to what3words.com then follow the instructions to find your location on the map and generate your code.

3. Get the app:

a) Go into the app store on your phone and download the app onto your phone or tablet.

b) Open the app - you will have to key in your name and address and contact details.

b) Open the app - you will have to key in your name and address and create a password.

c) The app will guide you through the simple process of finding your code using a map or satellite view.

d) Save the code in the app and take a note of it.

Note: If you have the app on your phone you will able to use it to generate a code for anywhere. This could be a lifesaver in an emergency especially in the countryside.
